Distinguishing surface damage from structural hull damage

Fiberglass & Hull Repair

A mark in gelcoat and damage affecting the underlying composite are not the same. Impact history, crack location and surrounding indications help inform the assessment. Photographs can provide initial information, but on-site inspection may be needed to establish the repair method and scope.

Start by identifying the need

We repair breaks, cracks, impact damage and gelcoat defects on fiberglass and composite hulls. Surface indications and areas requiring structural assessment are distinguished to define work appropriate to the vessel.

The appearance of a crack alone may not reveal the extent of hull damage. Methods depend on its location, the material structure and assessment findings. Preparation, repair and finishing are considered together; photographs alone are not treated as a definitive structural diagnosis.

Areas to include in the assessment

These topics can help you prepare a list of needs before discussing the work. Not every task is necessary for every vessel; scope depends on equipment, current condition and usage plans.

  • Fiberglass and impact damage repair, damaged area renewal and laminating.
  • Assessment of surface and structural cracks and reinforcement where required.
  • Composite component repair and gelcoat scratch and crack treatment.
  • Checks for signs of osmosis; surface correction, filling and sanding after repair.

What information can you share when planning?

Prepare the marina or boatyard location, vessel type and size, previous service records and preferred dates. If you have noticed a problem, explain when it began and under which conditions it appears. Photographs or short videos can help the initial discussion, while the full extent of technical or structural issues may require on-site assessment.

Organising service in Muğla

SolyMar is based at Martı Marina, Orhaniye / Marmaris. Requests at marinas and boatyards in Göcek, Fethiye, Bodrum and other Muğla districts are planned according to scope. Whether work will take place afloat or ashore, and site access conditions, should be clarified during the discussion.

This guide provides general information. Methods and scope for your yacht are established following assessment.
